Communicating Better With People on the Autism Spectrum

Review:

Communicating Better with People on the Autism Spectrum: 35 Things You Need to Know - Paddy-Joe Moran

This has been a great help. Most of what is included in this should be obvious, but it is easy to forget how to handle yourself at difficult times when trying to communicate with someone whose mind does not process things the same way as most others.

This is written by a man who has an autism diagnosis, so this is the best advice possible. When you have someone in your life who is on the spectrum I promise there will be times when communication is not working out perfectly. It took me years to figure that sarcasm is generally not a good way to communicate. I wish that I read this when I first started in the field I work in. So much confusion, damage, and anxiety could have been avoided. Things that I had said have caused major repercussions. This should be required reading for anyone who finds themselves in close contact with someone with autism, heck it should be required reading for everyone.

If you are looking for an in depth exploration of communicating with those on the spectrum, this isn't it. This is for someone who wants good advice that is easy to understand and apply.

Just checking in...

I haven't been very social on here lately. Everything is going good. I have been busy at work. I have taken on a client who everyone has just given up on. It has not been easy. He has a diagnosis of autism, ADD, multiple personality, bipolar, and a penciled in sociopath penciled in to boot. I have made great progress. Today we had only one behavior involving a woman waving at him and a certain body part plastered against the window for all of the public populating the main street on which we are located (at least 40 people if (I had to guess). I had to laugh, but quickly ceased doing so when it occurred to me just how bad it looked with a mentally handicapped male client who is about 6'3" with his genitals plastered against a window, and me standing behind him laughing outloud. Anyways, our normal day has always, before today, been almost nonstop aggression from him, and me having to diffuse constant possible chaos. I saw a different side of him at work this morning. I was starting to feel helpless, but this shows that mabe there is a light at the end of this tunnel, and not from a train.

I have not had much time for reading, besides simple books in an attempt to catch my clients interest. I have discovered that he has a vast knowledge of religion and almost obsesses and what type different areas generally practice. He loves anything involving geography, and I feel I may need to increase the level of difficulty of the work he can accomplish and comprehend. I know in order to do the best I can for him that I have to increase my knowledge of things that interest him. I know a bit about certain religions, but not to the extent that will satisfy him. My reading will probably focus on this in the near future. If I don't reach certain goals with this man, my time with him will decrease, or possibly cease. I also feel that our program is a last attempt before someone gives up and he is lost in the system and is placed in a setting that will let him go backwards and become nothing, or worse.

I will be around, but not as active as normal, I need to focus and do what I do best.

Rules - Cynthia Lord

My daughter is about halfway through this, for the second time. Do teachers not communicate? This is assigned reading this year, last year it was extra credit reading, in the middle of the.

It is amazing what one year will do to an opinion on a book. Last year she said she would have given it a 3 and 1/2. This year, she says the writing is boring, and reminds her of something that would have been in the story collection books in fourth grade, only a bit longer.

Punderdome

Review:

The first thing I learned one thing very quickly, I SUCK AT THIS GAME, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it just fine, once they figured it out.

You get a box with two sets of cards, two mini notepads, two mystery envelopes, instructions, and these mystery prize papers that I just don't understand. Everything fits nice and tidy in the box.

This was best enjoyed when played in a group. I took it to a work gathering, though I did not participate, it was enjoyed with lots of shouting and insults in the form of puns.

I don't think this is something that everyone will enjoy. It takes a lot of thinking, and I can see where it may be hard to find a group that would enjoy it together.

All this considered, it will probably sit on a shelf collecting dust. Maybe it will see some use better in the game room at work.

Shades of Midnight [Book Club Edition] - Lara Adrian

I started this series a while ago. For the life of me I can't remember why I quit reading it.

Reminds me a lot of Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. Will continue on with the next book. I love that this was set in Alaska. It is my very favorite place for books I read to be set in.

Jacob

Review:

Jacob - Jacquelyn Frank

I liked this. About halfway through the book I realized that I had previously read this.

This as a paranormal romance with a demon and a druid as the main characters. Interesting ideas, but nothing super unique.

I liked the authors writing. Reminds me of Lords of the Underworld. I will continues this series.

Reading progress update: I've read 5%.

Nolander - Becca Mills

I hope this continues to be a good read. I forgot to return two library books so I am locked out of my library's digital content. I haven't moved money from saving to checking, so no debit card. My Kindle is being borrowed by my daughter. I am sure to be up all night. We have company, I am sleepng on the reclining love seat with htwo dogs and a seven year old. Scratch the seven year old, I moved him to the big beanbag.

Reading progress update: I've read 3%.

Nolander - Becca Mills

It had been different before Mom died. When she was around, her house on Fourth Street had been our gathering place.

Funny thing is that our family gathering place before our mother passed had been my parents home, on Fourth Street.

Crossing in Time

Review:

Crossing In Time - D. L. Orton, Micah McDonald

This is incredibly well written. The beginning of the book was good, but no where near as good as the second part. Some of this is set in "present day," some a dystopian setting, ad some in the past/present. This is mainly a romance, but isn't super sappy. The rest of the story isn't just there for filler like so many other books in the genre.

This is the start of what will be the Between Two Evils series. I was surprised to find out that this is the authors first book, no way does the book reflect reflect this. I am also super curious as to where the author will next take this series. Fingers crossed that book two will be as good, and that I have found an author to add to my must read list.

Review:

The Sexual Compass - Michael Reed

In this book we have two narrators. They are both unhappy with their social lives, especially with the love/sex part. There has been a scientific breakthrough that has proven that insulin can change a persons sexual orientation, it is called "mouse" because the study was confirmed with lab mice. The first narrator we meet is not named, I think. She is a young, single mother who has not much of a social life. This is to be expected after she had a child while they were off going to college, getting jobs, etc. The father of her child is useless, the first part of her story is about her relationship with him and where it went wrong. The second narrator is a thirty year old virgin named John. John is one of those guys who doesn't have any self confidence and hides behind jokes, excuses, etc. He feels women are just not attracted to him due to his outward appearance; too fat, too plain, too nice. He thinks women secretly just want a bad boy. He decides to experiment with mouse to see if he has more luck with men than with women.

This is well written. I did have to backtrack a few times to figure out who was telling the story, but other than that the story flowed nicely and really kept my attention. I feel the length of this book is perfect for the story, 136 pages.

This book brought a lot of questions to mind. Would people, not only homosexual, change their sexual preference if they could? Is it possible to control this in a medical way? How would the public react to a scientific find such as "mouse?" And so much more.

Pop Manga Coloring Book

Review:

Pop Manga Coloring Book: A Surreal Journey Through a Cute, Curious, Bizarre, and Beautiful World - Camilla d'Errico

I want to start by saying that I have never really read manga, but my daughter does, and she loves this coloring book.

I love the art in this, I have always thought manga was cute, and I love how the characters large, affectionate eyes.

This is like a lot of other coloring books I have. It has a removable dust cover giving it a more "elegant" and "pricey" look to it. This has pictures printed on both sides of the pages, so I don't recommend it for markers, but I also haven't tried them either. My prismacolor pencils work really well on this.

This would be sure to be liked by anyone who likes manga and also likes to color.

About The Author:

Hoof, Ass and Elbow...

So the kids got hoof, ass, and elbow... I mean hand, foot and mouth. They are crabby, contagious, and bumpy... not too bumpy though. I have my doubts as to whether the diagnosis is correct. Their feet and hands should also be broke out, not just their throats.

My company has a policy that states when members of your residential family are diagnosed with a contagious disease or illness that is easily spread, you must stay home from work through the incubation period. I hope to get a lot of reading done in my 1-4 days off. Don't know for sure length until I talk to director of nursing tomorrow.

I think I will work on my Netgalley titles and also my Freebie Finding.
